Wildcat Tenins Varsity vs Otsego High School (5 - 3) Win On Tuesday, Wayland hosted the Otsego at the Wayland Union Tennis Courts. Wayland vs. Otsego is always a close match and Tuesday was no exception. With 4 out of 8 matches (that’s 1/2…welcome back to math class!!) going to a 3rd set tie breaker, Otsego proved to be up to the challenge. At 1st singles, Chesney Hudson took his opponent 6-0, 6-2. At 2nd singles, Jake VanDuine also won in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-0. At third singles, Brayden Tompson faced his first real challenge against Otsego in a tough 3 set match. Brayden took the first set 6-4 but Otsego fought back and took the 2nd set 7-5. That set up Brayden for his first tie-breaker of the season. Brayden played tough, but in the end gave the tie-breaker to Otsego, 10-6. At 4th singles, Spencer Miller played through an early on-court injury to beat his opponent in a 3rd set tie-breaker! In a close match, Spencer showed his tenacity again by splitting sets, then winning a tie-breaker 10-5! This was Spencer’s 2nd tie-breaker of the season out of the first 3 matches. Great job Spencer! First Doubles, Mason and Jaden won their match 6-1, 6-1, but 2nd Doubles, Grant and Dawson, couldn’t keep up with Otsego and dropped their match 1-6, 5-7. In the “Amazing Comeback” category, 3rd Doubles Asher Hendricks and Easton VanHouten played their opponent to split sets, 6-4 and 6-7 forcing another tie-breaker. The teams traded back and forth until 9-9. Then Asher and Easton took the last 2, with Easton VanHouten ending it in dramatic fashion with a first serve ACE, to make the score 11-9 for the match! That is a monster freshman debut on the Wayland home courts with teammates watching. Great job boys - way to stay in it! At 4th doubles, the 3rd set tie-breaker story went the other way, with Otsego beating Santi and Brycen 11-6. Wayland takes the overall match, 5-3. Great job boys!
